| <emphasis> | Text to recieve emphasis (usually rendered in italics). Use this only when you actually want to emphasize a word, because the <firstterm> tag (below) or one of the Software Terminology tags is usually more appropriate. |

| <link> | An internal hypertext link. |
| <literal> | Text with a literal value. |
| <subscript> | A subscript (such as term2). |
